Over time, coffee grounds can become lodged or stuck along the walls of your coffee maker. The oils and grime from the coffee grounds will make your coffee taste bitter. The way you grind your coffee or the water you use also affects the taste of your coffee. With the right preparation techniques, you can make a delicious cup of coffee that is not bitter.
Things You'll Need
- 2 tbsp. citric acid
- 4 cups warm water
- 4 cups of cold water
- Filtered water
Remove the coffee filter and basket from your coffee maker and set them aside. Dissolve 2 tbsp. of citric acid into 4 cups of warm water. Afterwards, add in 4 cups of cold water. The citric acid will remove the coffee oils and grounds in your coffee maker that contribute to making your coffee bitter.
Pour the citric acid into the water reservoir and close the lid. Do not put the filter basket into the coffee maker.
Turn your coffee maker on and let it brew the citric solution half way. Once it reaches half way, turn it off and let it sit for 10 minutes.
Turn the coffee maker back on after 10 minutes and allow it to finish the brewing cycle. Once the brewing cycle has finished, rinse the coffee maker with filtered water two to three times. Wipe around the edges of the coffee pot to clean up any excess coffee grounds that can leave a bitter taste in your coffee.
Grind your coffee beans the correct way. Do not grind them too coarse or they will taste flat. If they are ground too fine they will taste bitter. When grinding the coffee, keep in mind the size of your coffee maker. The correct grind can be done at the store when purchasing your coffee beans.
Use filtered water when brewing your coffee. The better quality water will give you a better tasting cup of coffee that is not bitter.
