Pancakes, a traditional staple of American breakfasts, are also known as flapjacks, griddle cakes or hotcakes. Keeping them hot is an essential step in preparing to serve them.
Things You'll Need
- Stack of prepared pancakes
- Ovenproof serving dishes
- Aluminum foil
Keeping Pancakes Hot for Serving
After following your favorite recipe for pancakes (look for basic instructions in the "Joy of Cooking"), serve pancakes as they are done, hot off the griddle, which should be at 375 degrees F. If you will be serving them all at once, keep the finished ones in the oven while you prepare the rest.
Keep extra pancakes warm by stacking them in a glass or other ovenproof dish, or placing them on a foil-lined cookie sheet in the oven at 200 to 225 degrees F. Covering the dish with foil will seal in more moisture.
Warm up maple or other syrups in the microwave for less than 1 minute (depending on the wattage of your oven). This will prevent the topping from cooling down the pancakes on your plate. Also gently warm any fruit sauces you will be serving and keep butter sticks at room temperature before serving with pancakes.
Stylish ceramic pancake warmers keep stacks of flapjacks hot while serving family style.
Reheating Frozen Pancakes
Leftover pancakes can be frozen. First arrange them in single layers, then freeze them and store them in an airtight bag.
To reheat, defrost them for 1 day in the refrigerator or cook them while still frozen in the toaster oven, at 325 degrees F.
To heat up pancakes in a microwave oven, cover them with wax paper or a plastic cover to make sure they stay moist.
